About Granulated Activated Carbon Water
Filtration Quick Facts One pound of carbon contains a surface area of roughly 125 acres and can adsorb literally thousands of different chemicals. According to the Water Quality Association, a single granulated activated carbon filter can remove literally thousands of chemicals. Contaminants Removed Carbon is most effective at removing organic chemicals from water – substances composed of carbon and hydrogen. These can include the following: Chlorine. Added to the water supply to control micro-organisms, but creates a host of undesirable side effects, such as unpleasant taste and odor. It can also react with other elements in the water to produce cancer-causing compounds. Pesticides. A study of U.S. streams and ground water found that 96% of all fish, 100% of all surface water samples, and 33% of major aquifers contain one or more pesticides at detectable levels. Pesticides are linked to cancer, birth defects and neurological disorders. Arsenic. According to the World Health Organization, drinking water poses the greatest threat to public health from arsenic. Long-term exposure to arsenic via drinking-water causes cancer of the skin, lungs, urinary bladder, and kidney. Heavy Metals. Toxic metals can be present in industrial, municipal, and urban runoff, as a result of increased urbanization and industrialization. Toxic metals are linked to cancer. Benzene. According to the U.S. Centers of Disease Control, benzene leaks from underground storage tanks or from hazardous waste sites containing benzene can contaminate well water. Benzene has been linked to cancer and a variety of other diseases. Trihalomethane. A byproduct of chlorinating water (widespread practice in U.S. water supplies). Some scientific studies have linked trihalomethane to cancer. Radon. Can be introduced to your tap water through a private well or a public water supply system that uses ground water. Radon is obviously very toxic. Lead. Lead can be introduced into the water system from water pipes, or the solder on the pipes. Too much lead in the human body can cause serious damage to the brain, nervous system and red blood cells. It can also result in lead poisoning. Other contaminants removed include (partial list):
